Welcome to the Widlife Sightings Page
We encourage everyone to document all wildlife sightings in Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park. Be sure to provide as much information as possible, such as: date, time, location/trail, animal, size, color, quantity, etc.
Disclaimer: All sightings are posted "as is" and are not validated or confirmed. While it may be hard to mistake a deer as another animal, other creatures can be subjected to mistaken identity. For example, a bobcat or even a coyote can be mistaken for a mountain lion. This is why it is very important to provide as much detail to help validate the sighting. We reserve the right to withhold any postings that do not pass the "smell test" (if you know what I mean :-). Your sightings may also be edited for readability...

A single deer was sighted hiding near the bushes and under the tree cover off of Live Oak Trail. I'm not sure who startled who, but my heart skipped a beat and the deer pranced away quickly. The deer was seen Sunday, September 10, 2006 at 2:45 p.m. |

Was running the trail and came down under that overhanging tree (Borrego trail) and ran into a family of deer. Two fawns, a doe and a buck I assume (big antlers). It was September 8th in the evening. Glad to see them back, haven't seen deer there in a very long time. |

On September 2, 2006 at 10:50 am a deer was seen near the main entrance on Borrego Trail, probably about 50 yards in from the gate. It was in the bushes between Borrego Trail and the elementary school. It looked to be of average size although it was hard to see the deer through all the bushes. It was unusual to see a deer so close to the main entrance.

At about 6:30pm, I was descending Whiting Road on my mountian bike, just before Concourse Road. As I rounded a curve there was a small mountain lion leaping into the brush, about 50 feet in front of me. He was small, about 30 inches in body length, about 55 inches, if you include his long tail. He was light grey. He obviously heard me coming and immediately fled the scene. There was no threat of any kind. I am just reporting this if you have any interest in keeping tabs on the population of mountain lions in the area. |
