Wildlife Sightings in Whiting Ranch
Welcome to the Widlife Sightings Page

We encourage everyone to document all wildlife sightings in Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park. Be sure to provide as much information as possible, such as: date, time, location/trail, animal, size, color, quantity, etc.

Disclaimer: All sightings are posted "as is" and are not validated or confirmed. While it may be hard to mistake a deer as another animal, other creatures can be subjected to mistaken identity. For example, a bobcat or even a coyote can be mistaken for a mountain lion. This is why it is very important to provide as much detail to help validate the sighting. We reserve the right to withhold any postings that do not pass the "smell test" (if you know what I mean :-). Your sightings may also be edited for readability...

Monday, September 22, 6:25pm on Borrego Trail, two mountain lions were spotted by two joggers that I met on the trail. They were very sure of the sighting and the number. The two mountian lions were on the trail and ran off when the joggers came upon them.

I saw three deer just off of the Borrego Trail approximately half way from the entrance to the park on Portola/Market Place and the intersection of Borrego Trail/Mustard Road. I cannot remember the exact location, but I remember it being just beyond the sight of homes.

Attn Everyone: On September 30th, 2007 my girlfriend and I were mountain biking, It was a gorgeous day at about 4:50 PM we dumped out of the Serrano Cow Single track onto Serrano Rd. after peddling for a minute or so we saw something cross the road in the distance. It was about the size of an adult Labrador Retriever with shorter legs. I knew instantly it was either a really large bob cat or possibly a young mountain lion. After getting closer to where it had crossed we got off our bikes and looked left into the brush (about 45 yards) and could positively identify round ears, a long tail, and identical markings to a mountain lion. The exact location of this sighting was on the Serrano Rd about 50 yards before Line Shack Rd, and Live Oak trail (we were headed west bound). Surprisingly the cat was remarkably close to the surrounding buildings. The lion proposed no threat to us he/she seemed only curios about us. Keep in mind this was not a full grown cat... the mother could have still been around. Everyone keep their heads up, eyes open and be alert as we all know although rare, attacks can and have happened here. Remember bikers, lets obey the rules and etiquette of the trail and everyone, pick up a piece of trash if you see it. Keep our parks looking great! God Bless!
