Welcome to the Widlife Sightings Page
We encourage everyone to document all wildlife sightings in Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park. Be sure to provide as much information as possible, such as: date, time, location/trail, animal, size, color, quantity, etc.
Disclaimer: All sightings are posted "as is" and are not validated or confirmed. While it may be hard to mistake a deer as another animal, other creatures can be subjected to mistaken identity. For example, a bobcat or even a coyote can be mistaken for a mountain lion. This is why it is very important to provide as much detail to help validate the sighting. We reserve the right to withhold any postings that do not pass the "smell test" (if you know what I mean :-). Your sightings may also be edited for readability...

I saw 3 (together) foxes (at least I think that is what they were) up at 4 corners area. Appeared to be a mother and two babies. Came within 10 feet of me. Spent a good 3 - 4 minutes with them allowing me to snap a picture with my phone! Pretty cool!

A hiker spotted a mountain lion cub walking on the trail in Whiting Ranch today at approximately 12:45 p.m. near the sign that warns about mountain lions being in the park. He took a picture of it on his cell phone and showed me the picture. He said it looked lost. |

On Saturday 04/10/10 while our riding my horse in Whiting Park, I saw a gopher snake in the process of eating a full-grown cottontail rabbit !!!!.....I've had snakes as pets since I was in 5th grade....gopher snakes, garters, boas, and pythons, and I've never fed any on them a meal THAT much larger than their head! Granted this snake on Saturday was a good 5 feet long, but still, it was working very slowly on that rabbit!.....
Oh, the snake was in the cement 'drainage' ditch that runs parallel to the dirt riding trail along the east side of Glen Ranch Road, between the entrance to Whiting Park (the parking lot) and the traffic light. |

Saw a large Western Diamondback rattlesnake twice in one week right next to West side of sidewalk on Glen Ranch Rd. just North of Dimension next to concrete abutment. Probably has a den in concrete and should be relocated from sidewalk area. |

Just did an afternoon ride from Serrano Creek and saw a lot of deer along Serrano between Live Oak and the Edison split. A few small ones, a few big ones, all either relaxing in the brush or walking around next to the trail. Very cool. |
